Why?
The S.P.O.T.S. camp experience will focus on building functional skills to empower children to feel confident and successful in everyday life. Through activities we will facilitate each child’s capacity to improve emotional regulation, executive functioning and social skill building. We will use a collaborative approach inviting the children to guide in the activity selection and design. The children will be engaged in activities that will require “thinking”, “planning” and “doing” as a group. Camp therapists are experts in guiding this kind of process collaboration. Through our camp design and activities, the children will practice persistence and growing independence in problem solving. Camp therapists and counselors will foster each child’s development of determination, frustration management, and successful accomplishment of goals. Examples of activities may include planning a field trip, creating a recipe and shopping for ingredients, planning and building a game, and deconstruction and reconstruction of everyday objects. Participating in unstructured play to promote social confidence will also be a valued and integral part of the camp program. We want each camper to feel a sense of ownership and joy with the camp.
